We’re all staying at home these days, and it’s probably a big adjustment for your family. It can be hard to stay on top of work, cleaning the house, taking care of errands and groceries in this new normal we find ourselves in, let alone spending meaningful time together as a family and keeping the kids entertained. So to help out, here are 6 ideas for how to have some good old family fun at home – for during COVID-19 and after!
1. Play a board game together.
Playing board games with our families as children are some of our fondest memories. It’s a great way to bond together while having fun. If you haven’t played in a while, it’s time to take those boxes out of the cupboard or maybe even order a new one to try out. Some of our favourites are Settlers of Catan, Seven Wonders, and Ticket to Ride.
2. Work on a puzzle.
Puzzles can be a calming and stress-reducing activity that your family members can pick up and work on whenever you have a bit of downtime. Set one up on your kitchen or dining room table, put on some good music, and relax with your family as you put it together piece by piece.
3. Camp out in the backyard or living room.
As the weather is getting nicer, it’s making us think of all of the great camping and nature there is to enjoy in the Okanagan. While we might not be able to go on our annual camping trip this year, a fun activity to do with the family is to build a fort in the living room or pitch a tent in the backyard and camp out for the evening. Decorate the space with fairy lights, bring lots of snacks and hot cocoa, and cozy up together under the blankets for some quality time.
4. Learn to cook or bake something.
Are you ever wishing you were a better cook, but taking the time to learn always falls to the end of your to-do list? Well, now is the perfect opportunity to practice that skill! It’s also a great time to teach the kids some easy recipes, too. They even get to do some math by helping with the measurements, which is a homeschooling win-win!
5. Do some group exercise.
Staying healthy is more important than ever these days, and having a good exercise regimen is never a bad idea. Try following an online yoga video together or set up your own aerobics routine, like jumping jacks and skipping rope, in your living room or backyard. It’s a great way to pass the time and help the kids let out some of that pent up energy from staying inside.
6. Have a movie night.
Finally, our last family fun tip is to have a cozy movie night in together. Set up comfortable seating for everyone and make a bowl of popcorn. Settle in with a good movie, whether its streaming a new release or playing back an old favourite. To make it more engaging, you could even do a craft with your kids beforehand to make and decorate the tickets, and then have them admit you to the “theatre”!
