It’s that time of year again for Spring Cleaning. And with many of us quarantined at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s a great opportunity to delve into those hidden areas of your home that have been accumulating clutter and give them a good purge. Not only will it help you feel productive, but it’s more important than ever to have a space at home that feels light and clear to contribute to our overall wellness. Here are 5 areas of your home to declutter during quarantine.
Bathroom Cupboards & Drawers
It’s easy to hide away products in the bathroom, where cupboards and drawers keep them from view. Go through your bathroom storage and take everything out to evaluate. Get rid of any unused or expired products like old bottles of sunscreen or toothpaste. Take stock of your towels and see if there are any that could be donated (animal shelters are a great place to give old towels to!) Give your drawers and cabinet doors a good wipe-down before putting everything back in again.
Garage
Garages are probably the area in any home that is most likely to become cluttered. We don’t spend much time in the garage and it usually ends up being a storage space full of haphazardly stacked boxes, tools and equipment, and anything else we don’t necessarily want to keep in the house. Now is a great time to go through some of those boxes, let go of what you no longer need, and organize the rest. A great DIY project if you have some time on your hands is to look at building some built-in garage storage such as shelving or cupboards, which has an added bonus of potentially increase the value of your home as well.
Attic or Basement Storage
Again, in these rarely visited storage spaces of our homes, the clutter can creep up easily until before we know it, we have a whole space full of it. Then when the holiday season rolls around, we need to wade our way through a sea of boxes to dig up the tree and ornaments! But an organized storage room isn’t out of reach, especially now that we’re all spending more time at home. We recommend taking everything out, discarding what is no longer used or needed, and re-organizing what you keep with clear labels so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for next time you need it. Who knows, you may even find some forgotten treasures and can take a fun trip down memory lane with your family!
Kitchen Junk Drawer
We all have one: that drawer in the kitchen or another room where stuff goes and seemingly never comes out again. The junk drawer full of rubber bands, pens, note pads, paper clips, napkins, keys, and what have you. We recommend emptying the drawer and going through everything with a fine-tooth comb. It may also be helpful to order a few drawer organizers and sort items into sections in the drawer so that you can keep things separate instead of a jumbled mess. And of course, let go of anything you no longer need or use.
Kid’s Rooms & Toys
Finally, a great area to tackle at this point in time is your children’s rooms and play areas. Children grow so fast, and it can be tempting to hang on to toys that they no longer use for sentimental reasons. But if they’ve grown up a little and moved on to other interests, those things will just be creating more unused clutter and can be better used in another loving home. This is a fun activity to do with your children to teach them some principles around keeping a tidy space and giving away what they no longer use or need. Go through their toys with them and try giving them a limit on how many they can keep to help them discern between what they really need and what they no longer want.
