Does your home need a little bit of a face lift? Undertaking major renovations like a new kitchen or bathroom is expensive and a lot of work. However, you don’t need to make those kinds of drastic changes to feel better about your home.
In fact, there are several smaller things you can do that might not seem like much, but can really help give your home a little refresh. Here are some minor home improvements you can take care of yourself that will have a big impact on the look, feel, and most importantly, value of your home.
Hardware
The first small improvement you can make is hardware. Think things like door handles and hinges, cabinet and drawer pulls, and towel hangers. Are the ones in your home outdated? Do they all go together, or are they mismatched? Updating all of these little touches will give your home a much more modern and consistent feel.
Lighting
Lighting fixtures can dramatically change the overall look and ambience of a room. For example, adding wall sconces down a hallway or changing to a statement chandelier in the dining room. Even just swapping out your lightbulbs to a different tone (warm or cool) can heavily impact how a room looks and feels.
Faucets
Faucets are another small item that are actually quite easy to change out yourself. See if the faucet in your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry/mudroom could be updated to something more modern or to your tastes.
Shower Heads
Similarly, shower heads are easily swapped out and can make a world of difference to your everyday life! Adding something like a rain head shower gives your daily routine a touch of luxury, and also refreshes the look of your bathroom.
Accent Walls
If you have any rooms in your home that just feel sort of blah, consider painting an accent wall or using wallpaper to bring focus and add interest. Where your accent wall goes depends on your room and layout. Good options are typically the wall behind the headboard of your bed, or any wall that is separated from the rest of the room by a bulkhead.
Wall Hangings
If painting or wallpapering are too much of a commitment, you could always try updating the hanging décor on the walls. Adding things like mirrors and paintings or even a gallery wall can really transform the look and feel of any room in your home.
Furnishings
Swapping out furniture is another easy way to make big changes, although it can get expensive. To save money, try simply re-arranging furniture or exchanging items from different rooms to update the look of your home. You can also purchase secondhand furniture if you’re on a budget, or try refinishing old wooden pieces with new paint. With furniture, the possibilities are endless!
Décor
On the other hand, updating the décor and accents around your home comes at slightly less of a commitment and expense compared to changing furniture. These smaller items such as throw pillow covers, blankets, plants, bookends, etc. can easily be changed or moved around to update the look and mood of a room.
Window Coverings
Take a look at the window coverings around your home (things like blinds and curtains). Are any outdated or needing to be cleaned? Getting all new window coverings can be expensive, but certainly adds value to your home. An easy and less expensive option is to install new curtain rods and hanging curtains yourself.
Bedding
Finally, in your bedroom, children’s rooms, or guest rooms, consider changing out the bed linens. Replacing the duvet cover with a new colour or texture can make a world of difference on the overall look and feel of the room, making it feel brand new again!
